Sri Hulluru Srinivasa Jois

Historian, Researcher, Patriot and a Dedicated Voice for Karnataka Unification

The history and cultural heritage of Chitradurga have been preserved not only in its magnificent fort, monuments and inscriptions, but also through the tireless efforts of scholars who devoted their lives to discovering and documenting the past. Among them, Sri Hulluru Srinivasa Jois occupies a distinguished place.

A historian and researcher, lawyer, writer, journalist and patriot, Srinivasa Jois also actively participated in the Indian freedom movement and the movement for the unification of Karnataka. Through decades of historical research and writing, he brought the forgotten stories of Karnataka, particularly Chitradurga, to the attention of Kannada readers.

His life represents an extraordinary combination of scholarship, patriotism and public service.

Early Life and Family Background

Hulluru Srinivasa Jois was born on 29 March 1892.

His family's roots had an interesting history of migration. About three centuries earlier, his ancestors had migrated from Ambale village near Kotturu in Ballari district to Hulluru in Chitradurga district.

His father was Panduranga Jois and his mother was Parvathamma.

Srinivasa Jois received his primary education in Chitradurga. After passing his matriculation examination, he worked for some time. His thirst for education, however, led him to continue his studies.

He later obtained a degree in law and began practising as a lawyer.

A Lawyer with a Passion for History

Although law was his profession, Srinivasa Jois's intellectual passion lay in study and historical research.

He developed considerable expertise in investigating Karnataka's past. Historical documents, places, personalities, events and traditions attracted his attention.

For him, history was not simply a collection of dates and royal dynasties. It was a way of understanding the language, religion, culture, courage, nobility, ideals and generosity that had shaped Karnataka society.

This approach made his historical writing meaningful to ordinary readers as well as those interested in research.

Three Hundred Articles in Twenty-Five Years

Srinivasa Jois dedicated approximately twenty-five years to historical writing and research.

During this period, he wrote more than 300 articles, dealing with historical places, personalities and events as well as broader aspects of Karnataka's language, religion and culture.

Through these writings, he sought to introduce Kannada readers to the virtues and ideals reflected in their own history — courage, righteousness, generosity, cultural pride and social values.

His work helped generate greater awareness about Karnataka's historical inheritance at a time when systematic documentation of regional history was especially important.

Chronicler of Chitradurga and Karnataka

Chitradurga occupied an important place in Srinivasa Jois's research.

The region possesses centuries of history — from ancient settlements and dynasties to the Nayaka period and the dramatic stories associated with Chitradurga Fort.

Srinivasa Jois worked to collect, study and record this heritage.

At the same time, his interests extended beyond Chitradurga. He wrote extensively about the broader history of Karnataka, helping readers understand the connections between places, personalities and historical developments across the Kannada-speaking region.

His contribution is therefore significant both to Chitradurga studies and Karnataka historiography.

Author of Important Historical Works

Hulluru Srinivasa Jois authored ten books.

Among his important works are “Gandugali Kumararama” and “Kannada Kali Sirumana Charite.”

His work connected readers with historical personalities and events and helped bring Karnataka's past into popular Kannada historical consciousness.

One of his particularly valuable contributions was “Chitradurgada Bakhairu”, an important historical document that he edited and published.

By bringing such material into publication, he helped preserve valuable historical information for later generations.

Recognition from Ta. Ra. Su. and G. Varadaraj Rao

The respect Srinivasa Jois commanded among Kannada literary figures is reflected in a noteworthy tribute paid by two distinguished writers.

Renowned Kannada novelist Ta. Ra. Su. (T. R. Subba Rao) dedicated his celebrated work “Hamsageethe” to Srinivasa Jois.

Similarly, G. Varadaraj Rao dedicated “Kumararamana Sangatya” to him.

These dedications reflect the respect that writers and intellectuals of the period had for Srinivasa Jois's historical scholarship and contribution to Kannada culture.

A Patriot and Karnataka Unification Activist

Srinivasa Jois was not a scholar who remained confined to books and archives.

He was a patriot who actively participated in the freedom movement.

He was also deeply involved in the movement for the unification of Karnataka.

Before Karnataka was unified, Kannada-speaking people lived under different administrative regions. The unification movement sought to bring Kannada-speaking areas together under a common state.

For scholars and activists such as Srinivasa Jois, this was not merely an administrative demand. It was closely connected with Kannada language, cultural identity and historical consciousness.

His participation in both the freedom struggle and Karnataka Unification movement reveals the strong connection between his scholarship and patriotism.

Contribution to Journalism

Srinivasa Jois also made significant contributions to journalism.

He worked as a newspaper correspondent and served as President of the Chitradurga District Journalists' Association.

His involvement with journalism gave him another platform through which he could engage with public affairs, history and society.

He also served in responsible capacities associated with organisations and committees including the Mysore State Journalists' Association, the Mysore Regional Historical Records Search Committee, and planning-related committees.

His activities demonstrate the remarkable breadth of his public life.

Founder of Chitradurga's Archaeological Museum

One of Srinivasa Jois's particularly important contributions to heritage preservation was his association with the archaeological museum at Chitradurga, which he established.

He subsequently served as its Honorary Curator.

A museum is more than a building containing old objects. It preserves physical evidence of the past and enables future generations to understand the people and cultures that came before them.

Through his efforts to collect and preserve historical material, Srinivasa Jois helped safeguard evidence connected with a history extending over nearly two thousand years.

His work therefore went beyond writing history; he also worked to preserve its material remains.

Titles and Honours

Srinivasa Jois's scholarship earned him recognition and honorary titles.

Among the titles bestowed upon him were “Itihasa Samshodhana Prasakta” and “Aitihya Vimarshana Vichakshana.”

Such honours reflected recognition of his dedication to historical research and critical study of historical traditions.

Yet perhaps his greatest honour is the continued relevance of the historical material he helped preserve.

Final Years and Passing

After a life dedicated to law, historical research, literature, journalism, public service, the freedom movement, Karnataka Unification and heritage preservation, Sri Hulluru Srinivasa Jois passed away on 8 November 1956.

The date carries a poignant historical significance: his passing came only days after the formation of the unified Mysore State on 1 November 1956, an achievement closely connected with the Karnataka Unification movement to which he had contributed.

A Historian Who Preserved the Memory of a Land

Hulluru Srinivasa Jois was much more than a collector of historical information.

He understood that people who forget their history risk losing an important part of their identity.

For approximately twenty-five years, through hundreds of articles, books, historical documents, journalism and museum work, he attempted to reconnect Kannadigas with their past.

For Chitradurga, he was a dedicated chronicler of its heritage.

For Kannada, he was a writer and researcher.

For Karnataka, he was a patriot and advocate of unification.

For history, he was a tireless seeker and preserver of evidence.

Sri Hulluru Srinivasa Jois did not merely study history — he helped preserve nearly two millennia of historical memory so that future generations could understand the greatness of the land to which they belong.
